The Problem with Numbers-First Planning 

Starting the year with financial goals like savings and debt reduction sounds like a solid plan. Yet, it's easy to get caught up in the numbers and lose sight of the purpose behind those goals. According to Proverbs 29:18, "Where there is no vision, the people perish." Goals without a purpose lack staying power. Over the past 30 years, I've helped families connect their budget with their calling, transforming financial stress into peace. 

Vision Over Numbers 

The key to overcoming financial drift is to start with a vision rather than numbers. While spreadsheets can make you feel stuck, starting with prayer allows God to reveal His vision for your life. This divine direction pulls you forward, even when discipline feels burdensome. Ultimately, your numbers need a North Star, and God provides that vision. 

Mission Converts Categories 

Budgets often seem restrictive, but when aligned with a mission, they become tools for ministry. As we plan for 2026, ask God, "How do you want me to serve?" When you understand God’s vision, your giving, saving, spending, and investing naturally align. Categories become assignments rather than obligations, counteracting impulse spending by infusing every action with meaning. 

Building Peace Step by Step 

Peace isn’t built overnight but through small, faithful steps. It's crucial to understand that God honors faithfulness before providing increase. You're not behind; you're actually building towards a greater goal. This understanding aligns with the idea that God gives peace before plenty, preparing us to handle increased blessings without chaos. 

From Chaos to Clarity 

Many times, we pray for abundance but are asked to wait. This might feel like a delay, but it is God’s way of preparing us. Increased blessings without preparation can lead to chaos, which is why provision isn’t just about money but also about clarity and contentment. 

The Power of Peace

The first sign of aligning with God’s direction is a return of peace. When you experience peace, you’re on the path God intended for you. Proverbs 16:9 reminds us, "In their hearts, humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps." Trust that God cares for you and wants you to succeed. 

A Call to Prayer 

To integrate God’s vision into your financial planning, begin with this prayer: “Lord, help me hear your vision above my fear. As we plan for 2026, let your will guide my financial decisions, filling me with joy and generosity.” 

Your Financial North Star 

Take two minutes to pray and complete this sentence: "In 2026, I will use money to serve God by ______." Then, place that sentence at the top of your budget where you can see it daily. Let this be your financial North Star.
