Is it ever wise to pay more for something that isn’t technically a “need,” especially when it comes to where you live? In today’s episode of Financially Confident Christian, I’m answering a powerful question from a 34‑year‑old listener who is an introvert, has spent years living with roommates, and is simply done. Their current roommate is moving out, and staying in shared housing would keep the rent at $1,300, but living alone would raise it to $2,100 a month. They make about $5,500 after taxes, have no debt, healthy savings, and low expenses otherwise, so on paper it’s possible. But emotionally, they’re wrestling with guilt over spending more on personal space and wondering if that’s irresponsible.
In this episode, I walk through how to approach a decision like this from both financial and spiritual perspectives. We talk about why housing isn’t just “shelter” but also peace, rest, and emotional health, what it really means to pay for privacy, stability, and control over your environment, and the trade‑offs that come with higher rent, like less margin, less flexibility, and the need for tighter budgeting. I’ll show you how to calculate your true leftover amount after this higher rent, how to make sure the decision fits your long‑term goals, and how to deal with the guilt of spending more when others might call it “unnecessary.” We’ll look at Proverbs 15:16, “Better a little with the fear of the Lord than great wealth with turmoil”, and talk about why, sometimes, paying more is worth it when it supports a life of peace, purpose, and wise stewardship.
