Have you ever wondered whether helping your adult child financially is truly helping them move forward, or if it might actually be keeping them stuck? In this episode of A Financially Confident Christian, I explore one of the biggest family and financial challenges many parents are facing today as more adult children move back home due to rising living costs and financial setbacks. I explain why there is an important difference between supporting someone through a difficult season and unintentionally enabling long-term dependence. We walk through practical ways to create healthy boundaries by treating the situation as temporary, setting clear expectations, and establishing milestones that encourage progress toward independence. This episode is about showing love with both grace and wisdom so I can strengthen my family without sacrificing their future or my own financial security.
I also share why financial support should always include a plan, not just ongoing assistance with bills or expenses. We discuss the importance of helping adult children develop budgeting skills, understand their income and spending, and contribute fairly to the household so they can build responsibility and confidence. I explain why parents should never jeopardize their own financial future by taking on debt or reducing retirement savings to provide continued support, and how Galatians 6:5 reminds us that each person is ultimately responsible for carrying their own load. Most importantly, I encourage myself to lead with both compassion and accountability, trusting that loving boundaries can become one of the greatest gifts I give my child. My hope is that this episode helps me find the balance between generosity and responsibility while strengthening both my family's relationships and financial future.
