What should you do when you take out a loan, then realize you don't actually need the money anymore? In this episode of Financially Confident Christian, I answer a listener who borrowed $5,000 for a used car, then financed a newer vehicle from Carvana instead, leaving the loan cash sitting in the account and a credit score that dipped from the inquiries. They're wondering whether to pay it off right away or park the money and make larger monthly payments to build credit history. I start by reframing the whole situation, because this wasn't a dumb move, it was a wise pivot based on new information, and there's no shame in changing course. I also explain why credit scores temporarily drop after multiple hard inquiries and why that dip doesn't mean any lasting damage.
From there, I weigh the real interest cost of keeping the loan against the small credit benefit, and point out that the new car loan already builds installment history on its own. I give you three specific questions to ask your lender before deciding—whether there's a prepayment penalty, the exact payoff amount, and how an early payoff will be reported. Then I lay out a clean seven-day plan: don't spend the money, get your answers, and pay it off if there's no penalty. I also speak to the self-condemnation that so often follows financial missteps, reminding you that faithful stewardship isn't about never making mistakes but about acknowledging what happened and taking the next right step. Grounded in Proverbs 22:7, which reminds us the borrower is a slave to the lender, this episode is a reassuring reminder that financial peace comes from facts over fear—and that one loan doesn't define your future.
