Have you had one of those moments lately where you look at the total and it honestly feels a little surreal? Not because you bought anything extravagant. You just bought some groceries, maybe filled up your gas tank, maybe had a meal out with the family, a few household basics, and somehow the number feels so much higher than it used to be. Well, guess what? You're not imagining it. And you're not weak. And you're definitely not the only one feeling the squeeze right now. When everyday life starts costing more, it doesn't just pressure your budget, it starts pressing on your peace. So what do you do when life feels noticeably more expensive and you're trying to stay wise without living in constant stress? That's exactly what we're breaking down on today's show. Hello, friend. I'm Ralph Estep Jr. And I want to welcome you to Financially Confident Christian. And if you've been feeling like normal, life just gotten more expensive almost overnight, you're not alone in that. A lot of people with decent incomes are asking that same question right now. How did basic living start feeling this tight? So today I want to talk about this cost of living squeeze. What's really happening emotionally and financially. But most of all, I want to talk about how you can respond with wisdom instead of panic. And this leads us to today's voicemail question.

Speaker B

Hey, Ralph, I gotta ask you something because it's been bugging me. I feel like I'm losing my mind here. You know how like a couple years ago, groceries and rent and going out to eat, it was just normal, right? And now it's just feels like it hit all at once. Even people who are doing okay are just constantly pinching pennies.I mean, I catch myself before I buy stuff now that I used to just grab without thinking twice. It's weird. So I'm curious, like, am I the only one noticing this or are other people doing the same thing? What are people actually cutting back on to get by right now? I'd love to hear what's working for them because honestly, I'm running out of ideas. Thanks, Ralph.

Speaker A

Really appreciate you and I appreciate you, and I truly appreciate this question because you're not alone on the island of stuff costing more. And what you're feeling today is real. And that's why we want to get into this, because why stewardship in an expensive season starts with honest adjustments and not shame. And that's what you're really asking me, Ralph. What are some honest adjustments I can make instead of living in this shame? So let's talk about this. The first step is to name what's happening without minimizing it. The first thing I want to say is pretty simple. Again, you're not imagining any of this. Many everyday costs really have gone up, and that's affecting people across all income levels. I like what you said in your voicemail there. It's affecting everything. And it isn't about being bad with money. That's not all we're talking about.Sometimes the math really did change. And when groceries and housing costs, insurance, utilities and transportation are all rising at once, it creates this pressure so fast. And that pressure can make you feel disoriented, especially if your income isn't rising at the same pace. Because sometimes financial stress isn't coming from reckless living at all. A lot of us want to say, well, that person's just living reckless. That's not what we're dealing with right now. It's coming from more expensive living in general. But here's how you have to combat that. You got to start by not letting rising costs quietly rewrite your habits without your consent. One of the hardest parts of inflation is that it sneaks into your normal routines. Those things that used to feel small and automatic suddenly become budget leaks right now. We talked about it a minute ago. Eating out those subscription renewals, convenience spending, those quick store runs. All of that's hitting harder right now. So this is the moment to pause and ask what still fits this season? And unfortunately, what needs to change? But we have to embrace the fact that this isn't failure, this is stewardship. Because even in proverbs, it teaches us to live with wisdom and attention and. And not drift and denial.Because if the seasons changed, your spending plan may need to change as well. Let's get into some practical adjustments where they actually matter. Here's what my recommendation is.Start with the categories that usually move the most. We talked about this a minute ago. Groceries. That's a big one. I went to the grocery store last week. I was amazed at how much stuff costs. Now, that's one of the main categories. So where can you spend less money there? Where can you make some better decisions? Another one is housing. Housing has gotten more expensive.Gas has gotten more expensive. Especially right now, as I'm recording this, we're still dealing with the situation in Iran, and that's causing gas prices to go up.Insurance has gone up. I see insurance going up across the board, both homeowners insurance. I see it with driving insurance or car insurance.Even some life insurance policies are higher now. And of course, don't miss this One, eating out got more expensive.Of course eating out got more expensive because the components to that, the labor cost of that has all gotten more expensive. So here's what I want you to do. Look for recurring expenses before you obsess over those tiny one time purchases. It's real easy to look through your money and say, oh, I spent this, I spent that. But where most of the time the leaks are coming from are those recurring expenses that just keep happening over and over. Here's some adjustments that people are making right now. Maybe do some meal planning more intentionally since the cost of groceries is higher. You got to be more intentional now in your decisions about planning your meals. You might just have to reduce some takeout costs right now. It just costs more right now. Shopping with a list is another great idea.If you go in with the list and say I'm only going to buy those things that are on the list, that is going to be dramatic for you. You might have to think about switching stores. Maybe it's time to look at some of those outlet stores or some budget stores.Always take a look at your insurance. We've done a few shows on that. Trimming those subscriptions. I'm on a morning show. We talked about this subscription creep.Take a look at your subscriptions and maybe you got to delay some non essential upgrades. Now if your rent or debt payments are taking up too much your income, the issue might just not be coffee money. It it might be that your fixed expenses need attention. So you've got to focus on changes that create breathing room every single month.I agree, small cuts can help, but the biggest peace, and I say peace as comfort. Peace usually comes from fixing the biggest pressures. Which leads me to this. You got to respond from a place of peace, not panic.Expensive seasons like this can tempt you to live in this constant frustration or fear. You hear it all around you. I don't know how much more I can take. Fear says everything is out of control. That's not where we want to live our lives.Wisdom tells us, let's deal honestly with what's in front of us. You may not be able to control the economy, but you can control your response. So this is a great time to update your budget to reflect the current prices. You may have to go back to your budget and change some assumptions.Hey, one thing we're going to be talking about over the next couple weeks is giving every dollar a job based on today's reality, not what yesterday's habits were. And you might need to look at income as well. This Might be a season of working some overtime, maybe finding a part time job, hey, selling those unused items, or some skill based side income. You don't need to panic about this season, but you do need to plan for it.So as I said, if light feels tighter right now than it used to be, the goal isn't pretending. It doesn't. It is. This is the reality. But the goal here is to respond early, to respond honestly and respond calmly. The truth is, wise people adjust.Faithful people face reality and feast. And peaceful people build a plan instead of living in quiet resentment. But now I want to take this just a little deeper.Because when everyday life gets more expensive, it doesn't just affect your budget. Of course it affects that. But it also affects your sense of safety. It makes you wonder why normal life suddenly feels so heavy. It can create frustration, it creates fatigue and a quiet fear about the future. So if you're listening right now, and that's where you are, I wanted to remind you of something. God's faithfulness is not tied to the economy. This may very well be a season that requires tighter stewardship. It might be a season that requires more intentional decisions and yes, more honest planning. But that doesn't mean he's abandoned us and it doesn't mean you failed. Sometimes faithful living looks like making peace with a simpler season and just trusting God to meet you in it.Just because life got more expensive doesn't mean you have to live more anxious. So here's today's win. I want to encourage everybody. Review your last 30 days of spending and encircle three categories that increase the most. Those are the ones that I'm going to encourage you to adjust. First, don't try to fix everything this week. Fix what's driving the most pressure.Well, let's get into our Bible verse for today comes to us from the book of Proverbs, chapter 27, verse 23. It says, Know well the conditions of your flocks and give attention to your herds. Now, you know I'm a cattle farmer.I'm always paying attention to the cows. I can look out the window to the side, they're out there right now. But this works with stewardship as well. Why?Stewardship starts with paying attention because you can't respond well to financial pressure if you won't look honestly at what life costs right now. So that's my big takeaway for today. We got to be honest about where life really is. Well, how about we close out today in prayer?Heavenly Father, I just want to lift up the person right now who's feeling stretched. That person who's feeling frustrated and weary from expensive how expensive life has become and you see the pressure they feel every time they buy groceries, Lord, and they pay those bills or they have to make responsible decisions for their household.I just ask right now that you would give them peace where anxiety has been building, give them wisdom to notice what needs to change and Lord, discipline to make those changes and honestly give us all courage to face the numbers honestly. Help us not to compare, help us not to panic and and help us not to give in to this hopelessness feeling that so many people feel.Remind us all that you are still faithful and you have given us wise stewardship in a hard season and all that still matters, Lord, provide for our needs, steady our hearts and guide our next steps. And we ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen, friend. You're not the only one feeling this. The pressure is real right now and wise adjustments are not a sign of failure. So go update that budget for this season and try and instead of trying to live by those old numbers and right now, if you're feeling a squeeze too, or if you found ways to adjust what actually works, listen, I'd like to hear from you too. It doesn't just have to be a question. You could send me in a comment of like, here's what's working for me, Ralph. Here's what's working for our family. And we'll mention that on the show because this is all about helping us all get past this. But you can go and record that at financiallyconfidentchristian.com/question We'll put a link in the show notes. But again, you can send me a message right at financiallyconfidentchristian.com/questionAnd I just want to thank you so much for joining me today. Thank you for sending in that voicemail. Stay financially savvy. You'll get through this tough season. We'll work on it together. God bless you.And you have a great day today.
